Robert Englund Biography

Robert Barton Englund, a classically trained actor, is a multifaceted American artist known for his work in film, stage, voice acting, singing, and directing. He is most famous for his portrayal of the notorious serial killer, Freddy Krueger, in the Nightmare on Elm Street film franchise. Englund received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performances in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988).

Early Life Of Robert Englund

On June 6, 1947, Robert Barton Englund was born in Glendale, California, to Janis and John Kent Englund. His father was an aeronautics engineer who played a crucial role in developing the Lockheed U-2 airplane. Englund has Swedish roots in his ancestry. He developed an interest in acting at a young age and began pursuing it seriously at the age of twelve when he accompanied a friend to a children’s theater program at California State University, Northridge.

After honing his craft in regional theater, where he showcased his talent by performing in plays written by Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw among others, Englund had five fruitful years as a stage actor. In 1968, he tied the knot with Elizabeth Gardner, a nurse, but their marriage ended in divorce four years later. Subsequently, Englund moved back to the West Coast in pursuit of opportunities in the film industry, and he secured a supporting role in Daniel Petrie’s movie Buster and Billie.

Over the course of his career, spanning from 1973 to the present day, Robert Barton Englund has featured in more than 75 feature films and has played leading roles in four TV series. He has shared screen time with illustrious Oscar-winning actors such as Henry Fonda, Susan Sarandon, and Jeff Bridges. Englund has gained worldwide recognition since 1984 for his portrayal of the infamous villain Freddy Krueger in the popular horror franchise A Nightmare on Elm Street and its seven sequels. In addition to his film work, he has made numerous guest appearances on various TV shows, including Bones, Criminal Minds, and Hawaii 5-0. Englund is set to star in the upcoming horror movie Fear Clinic and the English thriller The Last Showing. He has also lent his voice to the character of the Evil Beaver in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series.
