Vin Diesel was born to Delora Sherleen (Sinclair) Vincent, an astrologer, and stepfather Irving H. Vincent, an acting instructor, in New York City. He never knew his biological father and was raised by his mother and stepfather, who eventually adopted him. Diesel has said that he learned a lot about acting from his stepfather, who introduced him to the world of theatre and improvisation.
Diesel grew up in a multi-racial and multicultural community, which he credits to his love of diversity. As a child, he was also interested in sports and would often play street basketball with his friends.
Diesel’s acting career began in 1990 when he wrote, directed, produced and starred in the short film “Multi-Facial.” The film was about a mixed-race actor’s struggles to find work in Hollywood, a subject that Diesel was familiar with. The film was well-received at the Cannes Film Festival and helped Diesel gain recognition in the film industry.
Diesel continued to work on a number of independent films throughout the 1990s, including “Strays” and “Saving Private Ryan,” in which he played Private Adrian Caparzo. However, it wasn’t until 2001, when he starred in the hit action film “The Fast and the Furious,” that Diesel became a household name.
